Originally announced in 2019 after Huawei was restricted from accessing U.S. technologies, HarmonyOS is now being rolled out on smartphones and tablets for the first time, thanks to the Chinese tech giant’s release of the latest version 2.0 update. HarmonyOS 2.0 also replaces EMUI on smartphones and Lite OS on smartwatches, albeit without Google Mobile Services (GMS).
The story of HarmonyOS 2.0 (Hongmeng OS 2.0) began in December 2020 when Huawei announced developer beta testing slots for its old flagships including the Huawei P40 and the Mate 30 series devices. After 6 months of trials and errors, the company rolled out the stable version of the OS with a package size of 4.04GB on June 2 and the first batch of phones to receive the updates are flagship devices like the Mate 30 and 40 Series, the P40 Series and the foldable Mate X2.
According to Huawei, more than 120 million users have updated their devices to HarmonyOS 2.0 but the company isn’t resting on its oars as it began its sixth wave beta testing on October 1st. This is part of the company’s plans to transition more than 100 devices (as far back Mate 9 or P10) to its proprietary OS, which will see the number of HarmonyOS users jump.
Although there is no strict timetable for the release of the OS on different devices globally, more batches are expected in Q3, Q4 and 2021 H1. Here’s the information from Huawei on its plans to rollout HarmonyOS:
